Gynecologic endoscopy refers to laparoscopy and
hysteroscopy. Laparoscopy refers to the placement of a telescope usually
at the level of the belly button to examine and treat diseases in the
abdomen and pelvis. Hysteroscopy refers to the placement of a telescope
into the uterine cavity to inspect and perform surgery for abnormal
conditions in the uterine cavity.

Up to four instruments, (trocars) are inserted into the abdomen through
which a telescope and operating instruments are used to perform surgery.

The surgeon performs various laparoscopic procedures
by looking at the image on a TV monitor.

Hysteroscopy is performed by placing
a special telescope with a sheath through the
vagina into the uterine cavity. Polyps and fibroids may be removed by
hysteroscopy.
